Mum was an exceptional person, whose capacity for love and compassion was boundless. I have spoken of some of her abiding interests – travel, photography, nature, sport and her work. But Mum would say that her greatest interest was in people – her family and friends, her colleagues and students... even people that she had never met before. I lost count of the number of times that she got into conversation with a complete stranger while we were out shopping and, by the time we left the shop, she had heard their entire life story. It happened so often that it became a running joke in the family. I would turn to her and say “you've done it again” and she would give me an innocent look and say “I really don't know why that keeps happening – I didn't do anything to encourage them, did I?” In truth, all she did was to be herself: the unique individual that we all knew and loved. Her generosity of spirit shone through in everything she did. She was so many things to so many people – a devoted mother, loving sister and aunt, dedicated teacher and affectionate friend. But above all, she was a warm and wonderful person whose memory will be an inspiration to us for many years to come.
