Badminton (from Tribute)

The mixture of enthusiasm and dedication which characterised Mum's approach to life was particularly evident in her work, both as a teacher and as a badminton coach. Mum discovered a love of sport at an early age and soon decided that this was where her vocation lay. While at school, she took an active part in sporting activities as a member of the hockey first eleven and vice captain of the tennis team. This led to a place at Chelsea College of Physical Education, where she qualified as a teacher specialising in PE, dance and drama. From the very start of her teaching career, she threw herself whole-heartedly into her work, devoting much of her free time to developing new clubs and activities for her students. Throughout the years, she never lost her singular commitment to the young people that she taught and her desire to help them achieve their potential. Over the past few weeks, we have received many wonderful tributes to Mum from people who came to know her during her 25 years as a badminton coach, many of whom also regarded her as a friend. I would like to read you one of them: “What a positive influence she was on the countless youngsters whom she coached and nurtured with such affection, interest, understanding and care. She was a most exceptional person who touched the lives of so many –and whom it was such a privilege to count as a friend.”
